Profile
Irvine-born Matty Russell is a Scotland international winger who is noted for his bravery and willingness to carry the ball out of defence.
He started his career with Wigan Warriors, including time on loan at Hull FC, before spending the 2013 season with Gold Coast Titans.
He joined Warrington in 2014 and suffered a sickening injury against Widnes Vikings that September when he was knocked unconscious. His nose was broken and he later had his two front teeth removed.
He claimed the opening try in the classic 2016 Challenge Cup final against Hull FC as the Wolves built up a 10-0 lead before going down 12-10. He also played in the 2016 Grand Final against Wigan and scored a try when Warrington beat Brisbane Broncos 27-18 in the 2017 World Club Series.
He spent three years with Toronto Wolfpack, averaging a try a game, before spending the 2021 season with Leigh Centurions and the 2022 season with Toulouse.
He signed for Warrington for a second time in November 2022, putting pen to paper on a 12-month deal with a one-year option which the club were happy to take up.
On the international scene, he has shared in some of Scotland’s greatest moments, scoring a try against England in Coventry and playing in the 18-18 draw with New Zealand in Workington. Both came during the 2016 Four Nations competition.
