On the weekend of the 4th & 5th September, thousands of Rugby League fans will travel to the iconic St James’ Park, Newcastle, to watch their beloved team at this year’s Dacia Magic Weekend extravaganza.
Spare a thought for a group of Warrington Wolves fans who will have made their journey on two wheels to the Toon from one side of the country to the other. Leaving The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Friday 3rd September, 16 cyclists will attempt to travel to Newcastle in time for the Warrington Wolves game against Wigan Warriors on Sunday 5th September. Some of this year’s participants are actively involved in the life changing projects delivered in Warrington by the Club’s award winning charity Foundation, including the men’s mental health programme, Offload, which has recently celebrated its four-year anniversary.
Warrington Wolves Foundation Deputy Director James Howes, who is one of the cyclists this year, was quick to highlight how vital these fundraising challenges are to the work of the charity in changing the lives of people in Warrington through sport.
“The last 18 months have been incredibly tough for everyone and throughout it all, our supporters have continued to show their unwavering support the team, despite not being able to get to The Halliwell Jones Stadium in person until recently," he said.
"The crowd make a huge difference to the players and I’m proud to join the 15 other Wolves fans on what promises to be an epic challenge as we attempt to join Rugby League supporters from across Super League cheering on our teams in Newcastle. As a charity, we rely heavily on donations to continue our work in the local community and the funds raised will be used to support our sport, health and education projects for those most in need. We have witnessed first-hand how incredibly important the sport is to the people of our town throughout lockdown & hopefully we can inspire others to overcome challenges they may be facing in their lives.”
