Head coach Steve Price shares his thoughts following the Wire’s narrow 16-14 defeat away to Hull KR.
It was a disappointing game from our perspective. At the start of the game we gave away six penalties in the first 17 minutes and that was a reflection of our discipline throughout the whole game.
I didn’t sense we were off in the lead up to the game but from the first whistle I did. They dominated field position through a good kicking game and we struggled to get out of the back end especially in the second half. We were good enough to be up by four with a few minutes left and we’ve got to be better there to close out the game. Credit to Hull KR they found a way.
We’ve got a group of men who show a huge amount of heart. We kept finding ways to turn them away and I’m not sure how much time we spent on our try-line but it felt we were defending our goal-line for a long time. In the end we weren’t good enough.
[On Daryl Clark’s absence] That wasn’t a reason why we lost the game. We’ve got a group of men who whoever we put out are always confident they are good enough to do the job. I had the upmost confidence in Danny Walker and Matty Davis to do the job. It wasn’t meant to be today. Daz has been carrying a few niggles but he’ll be right next week.
I think there was a little bit of complacency and that definitely needs to be addressed. They’re always a dangerous team especially here at their place. We always respect that. We gave ourselves a chance to win the game before they scored late. We’ve got to be better. We’ve got to be hard-nosed and create more opportunities especially in good field position and be more disciplined.
