Henderson named as Wire assistant

Warrington Wolves can confirm the appointment of Andrew Henderson as the new first-team assistant coach to support recently appointed head coach Steve Price.

Former Rugby League international Henderson, 38, had a playing career spanning 14 years. The former Castleford and Sheffield hooker represented Scotland between 2003 and 2013, both in the European and World Cup competitions.

He began his coaching career at Sheffield before joining London Broncos as assistant to Joe Grima. At the start of 2015 he was elevated to head coach and in both 2016 and 2017 led the Broncos to a second-place finish earning a place in the qualifiers. This was recognised in 2017 as he claimed the title of Kingstone Press Championship Coach of the Year.

Henderson said: “It is a fantastic opportunity presented to me by Warrington. The potential Warrington has to become a stronger club is there. The club has built a solid infrastructure and superb facilities in recent years. I think as a team they had a disappointing year for their standards, but I believe there is some exciting young talent as well some good senior professionals who can lead the team forward. I’m excited to be supporting Steve and the staff to rebuild this team and help the club move forward as we strive for excellence.

“I’m looking forward to bringing my experience and knowledge to a great group of players and playing my part in them reaching their potential and performing to our standards. My experience at London has given me good grounding for this next step in my career. I’ve learnt a lot and thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Broncos, getting them back to a credible stage for them to be able to now kick on. However, I feel the time is right for me to move to the next level in this role. I can only thank London Chairman David Hughes for giving me the opportunity and supporting me now in this move”

“I have spoken to Steve at length and was impressed with his attitude and the changes he wants to make. I think he’s worked hard in the NRL over a number of years and comes to Warrington with a good grounding and good knowledge from the coaches he’s worked under and the environments he has been in. I’m confident, having spoken to him, that he’ll be able to drive the changes needed to put Warrington back on track and moving forward with myself and the performance team supporting him.”

Head coach Steve Price added: “Andrew has played Rugby League across a number of clubs in England. He’s always been enthusiastic and meticulous with his preparation, and I saw that first hand when Cronulla played an exhibition game against the London Broncos ahead of the World Club Challenge. He comes to us on the back of a great season down at the Broncos and I am excited to be working alongside him as his experience within the game gives him a lot to offer the performance team here at Warrington.”

Karl Fitzpatrick, Wolves’ chief executive, said: “Andrew has done a fantastic job at London Broncos and is regarded as one of the best young coaches in the game. I’ve really admired how he coaches his teams with the expansive manner in which they play. We saw it first hand in the qualifiers the quality ball movement he promotes and how he gets the best from his players. In Andrew, Steve and Lee (Briers) I think we’ve built an impressive, smart Rugby League coaching team that will leave no stone unturned to help us achieve success.”
