Last week The Halliwell Jones Stadium hosted the final of this year’s Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service 7s pre-match tournament, ahead of the Salford fixture.
The final was between Oakwood Avenue and Broomfields Junior School. Both schools having come through their tough semi finals against St Ann’s Primary and St Oswald’s Primary respectively. The school teams included players from across several local amateur community clubs; Woolston Rovers, Latchford Giants and Bank Quay Bulls.
Oakwood started the better team, taking the lead early on. Broomfields fought back, however. It was Oakwood Avenue who took the half-time advantage though, with a lead of three tries to Broomfield’s two.
The second half was a different story as Broomfields pulled away from Oakwood Avenue late on. They were led from the front by their captain Dan Stelfox, who demonstrated a splendid performance from a young individual. The final score was 6-3 to Broomfields; Stelfox named Player of the Match. Special mention also goes to Riley Horne of Oakwood Avenue.
James Johnson, Warrington Community Rugby League Coach, said: “The match was an excellent exhibition of primary school rugby, which even gained the attention of first -team head coach Steve Price who stayed to watch the full game. A big thank you to the staff of Cheshire Fire Service who attended and helped to run the tournament, and also to all the referees who played their part.”
