14 Super League coaches are preparing their teams to embark on this year’s Magic Weekend as the big event is now within touching distance.
This weekend will see seven top-flight games take centre stage at the Etihad Stadium; another Rugby League spectacle following the success of last year’s World Cup and the Aussie-winning final staged in the heart of Manchester.
Derby matches will raise the excitement amongst the fans once again and Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith is looking forward to his side bringing the curtain down on Sunday evening against north-west rivals St Helens, kick-off 5pm.
“It’s unique for any sport to have fans all together at one venue, on the same weekend. It’s a great atmosphere and to be the closing game of the event is a great honour for us as well. I think it could be a great game between two teams who will fight tooth and nail to get the spoils.
“(Derby matches), I think, produce some of the best Rugby League. St Helens have started the season well and they’re a real danger. They’re playing well at the moment and they came up with a good win on the weekend. They’ll be a real threat.”
The atmosphere is what creates the lasting memories for all involved and your Primrose and Blue support on Sunday can make all the difference.
“We’ve dominated that (support) pretty well at Magic for a number of years now. Hopefully we can do the same (again). Our support is enormous and it’s almost like a home game for us when we play the Magic Weekend” said Smith.
For the third year, Magic Weekend is bringing Manchester to life, as shirts from all corners of Rugby League come together. A good move according to Smith.
“It’s that central position…I know that we’ve taken it away over a number of years to different parts of the nation but this time, hopefully being in Manchester again, everyone in the heartland will support it like they did last year.
“I think, the fact we’re playing at (the) Etihad after the victory by Man City, is a big thing as well. The focus is around that ground at the moment and hopefully it can bring out some of the best Rugby League in the country this weekend.”
You can still be a part of the Magic with tickets still on sale in WolfWare, at WolfWare Online and on 08448 11 11 76 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm).
